Palladium
Palladium is a rare, silvery-white metal in the platinum group. It is IRS-approved for precious-metals IRAs, but its demand profile is overwhelmingly industrial, which historically has made it one of the more volatile precious metals.
Historical context
Palladium was discovered in 1803 and spent much of its history as a specialist industrial metal. It became eligible for precious-metals IRAs more recently, as approved coins and bars became available.
How it has behaved across market conditions
Palladium's price is closely tied to the automotive sector, where it is used in gasoline catalytic converters. Because demand is concentrated in one industry, palladium has historically shown larger price swings than gold.
A notable run-up occurred between 2019 and 2022 amid tight supply and tightening emissions standards, followed by sharp declines. Some investors consider palladium a higher-volatility, industrially-driven complement rather than a substitute for gold.
Supply and demand drivers
Mine supply is concentrated in Russia and South Africa, which has historically exposed the market to geopolitical and supply risk.
Demand is dominated by gasoline catalytic converters, with additional use in electronics and dentistry. Because platinum and palladium can sometimes substitute for one another in catalytic converters, their prices are often watched together.
IRS eligibility for a precious-metals IRA
To be held in a self-directed IRA, palladium must meet the IRS minimum fineness of .9995 and be produced by an approved mint or refiner, stored with an IRS-approved custodian and depository. Eligibility rules are set by the IRS and can change.
